Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in the First Consultation?

The first consultation is an opportunity for us to begin to think together about what has brought you to therapy and what you are hoping might change or be understood. I will be interested not only in the difficulties you are experiencing now, but also in some of the experiences and relationships that have shaped you. We can begin to consider what you might be looking for from psychotherapy and whether working together feels like a good fit.

How long does therapy last?

The length of therapy varies from person to person. While some people may benefit from a shorter period of work, I primarily offer longer-term psychotherapy, where there is time to develop a deeper understanding of recurring patterns and of the ways in which past and present experiences are connected. We can think together about the length of the work as it develops, rather than deciding everything at the outset.

How long is a therapy session?

A session lasts 50 minutes.

How much does a therapy session cost?

Please, see my Fees and Terms to find out how much a session costs.

What are terms and conditions of the therapy?

Please, see my Fees and Terms to find out terms and conditions.

How often do we meet?

Regularity is an important part of the therapeutic process. I usually work with people once or more times per week, depending on their needs and on what we are exploring together. Meeting regularly provides continuity and allows us to pay attention to experiences and feelings as they emerge, including what happens within the therapeutic relationship. Longer gaps can sometimes make it more difficult to maintain this continuity, particularly when difficult feelings or important experiences arise.

Is it confidential?

Yes, it is completely confidential. Please read the Ethics and Confidentiality page for more details.

What about holidays?

There are regular breaks in therapy, usually two weeks at Christmas, one week around Easter and two weeks during the summer, depending on my annual leave.

Regularity is an important part of the work, so if you have holidays or other planned absences outside these periods, it is helpful to let me know as early as possible. We can think together about how best to manage longer breaks, particularly when the work is emotionally demanding.
